Re-entry, which is sometimes referred to as Reverse Culture Shock, happens to pretty much everyone who participates in an immersive experience serving in the developing world in at least some way to some degree. The perspective shifts that these experiences entail are often jarring, overwhelming, and profound – they definitely can, and should, change your world view, mindset, and heart forever, which are great things – but the repercussions on you when you re-enter into your so-called normal life can be really challenging to deal with – in addition to the physical toll, feelings of guilt, embarrassment, helplessness, need for radical life changes, hopelessness, despair and depression are extremely common, and need to be acknowledged, processed, and used to take the mission beyond the immersive experience and turn it into sustainable impact – for those you served and for you.

In this special edition of the Changer Chats, we sit down with Chuck Walls and Micki McCabe Walls, whose legacy is having a ripple effect in Esperanza, Peru. As hands-on volunteers with Be The Change Volunteers, Chuck and Micki recently traveled to the remote village to help construct new school facilities and connect with students and teachers whose lives are being transformed. Today, they share insights into the heart behind their giving, what drives their commitment to education and opportunity, and why they believe in investing in the next generation of leaders. Their journey to Peru offers powerful encouragement for anyone wondering if one family can truly make a difference and serves as a reminder that service often changes the giver as much as the receiver.
Join us for an inspiring episode of Changer Chats as we follow Maddy Liciocci, BTCV SPED Advisor, on her recent journey through six BTCV Partner Schools. With the daily guidance of BTCV Community Partner Marisol Perez, Maddy and her team received invaluable local insight and support that helped make each site visit meaningful and impactful.
The Teachers Toolbox Grant was created to simplify the process of securing funding for classroom resources, making it easier for educators to bring their ideas to life and enhance the learning experience for their students. Whether it’s for essential supplies, innovative teaching tools, or creative classroom projects, this grant provides vital support where it's needed most.
Two places in the U.S. that couldn’t be farther apart — Anchorage, Alaska, and Jayuya, Puerto Rico — are separated by 4,895 miles. That’s the incredible distance new Changer Nelson Priddy traveled to Be The Change for others.
We had the pleasure of sitting down with Yak Nak, a fellow Changer, to explore the remarkable impact of his work in India. Through his innovative approach to teaching and learning, Yak has made a lasting impression on public health education at BTCV’s Partner Schools and within surrounding communities. In this interview, he opens up about his first journey to remote areas of India and reflects on how his interactive public health sessions are not only educational but also have the power to transform lives for the better.
