Our Impact

I want to thank BTCV for being such reliable partners, for so many years.

Today I am reflecting on how good and reliable you guys have been, as well as how many ways the secondary school has changed the Tahuayo.

I remember before there was a secondary school, Dolly arrived on a visit to the communities and heard how there was a “recruiter” from Lima saying he was looking for young girls to work in hotels in Lima. The families of the girls who left never heard from them again. Young women without an education are at such risk.

The lives you have saved, as well as improved. The number of graduates we are now helping with technical training in Iquitos, saving their parents from back-breaking work in the jungle as they age. So many ways that the secondary school has touched lives for the better, from eliminating sex trafficking of children, to alleviating the suffering of aging parents.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Sincerely, Paul Partner community, El Chino, Peru

More Than Aid. A Partnership for Change.

Paul’s words capture something we see in every community we serve: a school changes far more than a building ever could.

Be The Change Volunteers is so much more than a development aid organization. We partner with communities that have already decided to break the cycle of poverty for themselves, and we work alongside them, phase by phase and year after year, to build brighter futures for every student.

That commitment matters most for girls. In many rural communities across the developing world, girls leave school by the time they reach high school age. Poverty, child marriage, early pregnancy, and a lack of support for menstrual health and hygiene push them out of the classroom long before they finish their education. Without school, their options shrink and their risks grow, just as Paul saw in the Tahuayo before the secondary school opened.

At BTCV partner schools, we’re changing that story. Today, more than 10,000 children are in school in BTCV partner communities, and half of them are girls. Every one of those students represents a family with more choices, a community with more opportunity, and a future written by the people who live it.
